Is Your Roof Rack Overloaded?

Ratings and Roof Racks Sydney

There are two important factors when considering the load on the roof rack. One is the total weight because the vehicle can only take a certain amount of weight on the roof when driving. The other factor is how the weight is distributed because the vehicle will handle very poorly if too much weight is on over the back wheels, over the front wheels, or if there is too much weight on one side. We also do better to keep the weight as low as possible, as a high centre of gravity will also affect the vehicle handling.

It is also important to consider the environment where we drive the vehicle. We can carry a moderately heavy load when driving on the freeway, but only a lighter load when using 4WD on an outback dirt track.

Vehicle Ratings and Roof Racks Sydney

Any car will have a certain maximum load for the roof. This varies from one model to the next, so the owner will have to consult the car manual. Most 4WDs will satisfactorily carry 100kg on the roof. This is a good estimate if you don’t have the manual. Some 4WDs will comfortably carry 150kg or even 200kg.

It is easy to forget that the maximum load weight on the roof includes the weight of the roof rack. So it is in our best interest to have a roof rack that is as light as possible, yet still strong enough to carry a decent-sized load. There is little point in having a 60kg roof rack if the vehicle is only rated to 100kg. We would only be able to carry a 40kg load!

A good roof rack will use light aluminium or stainless steel design to keep weight down and prevent corrosion. Wide metal mesh is also a good idea as it provides many tie-down points for a lad securing rope.

Highway and Off-Road Roof Racks Sydney

The roof rack load restrictions apply to ideal conditions, like a highway where we stay at a steady speed or a suburban street where we can take a slow turn on corners. But if we are on a bumpy dirt road, or climbing desert sand dunes, then we are far from ideal conditions. We suggest carrying only half the recommended load if you are going off-road.

The vehicle can take a greater weight on the roof when stationary. This allows two people to sleep on a roof tent when the car is parked.
