When your vehicle has the right roof rack and accessories it makes it easier to carry your equipment and plan your next adventure. This can cover everything from a Saturday afternoon with the boat to a month-long camping trek across the country.

We might ask if one vehicle can cover every possibility. Well, with the right roof rack, you can be prepared for almost anything. So the question is, what, do we look for in the right roof rack?

Factors in a Car Roof Rack

Look at the weight – While we need the rack to be strong, we need to keep the weight to a minimum. So the issue is optimizing this situation.
Every vehicle will have a safe weight limit for the roof. This is usually about 100 kg when traveling, and perhaps 400 kg when the vehicle is parked. It is easy to forget that the rook rack is part of the weight limit. So if the rack weighs 50 kg, and the vehicle can only take 100 kg maximum, we will be left with only 50 kg of luggage.
A well-designed aluminium roof rack will be 30% lighter than the average steel roof rack and be equally strong. This means being able to carry more weight.

Look at Modular Design – This means being able to add accessories and remove them according to the situation. You can add a boat loader for the weekend, or a tent for a camping trip. Most of the time you can leave the roof rack at a minimum, and save on fuel costs.

Look at Accessories – This is part of the modular concept. But we need to remember that accessories are not universal. We probably cannot combine one company’s roof rack with another company’s accessories. So we do our best to buy a roof rack from a company that offers all the accessories we might need.

Low Profile – There is no getting past the fact that the rack will raise the vehicle height at least slightly. But if we keep this to a minimum we will still be able to take the vehicle into most situations. And the low height helps keep the drag (and therefore fuel efficiency) optimal.

Product Support – If the company you buy your equipment goes out of business you might be stuck with an unfixable rook rack. Or simply not be able to add accessories when you need to. Stick to an established company.
