Most of us can see the advantages of having a roof rack on our vehicle. The addition storage space provided by a roof rack is great for camping or when carrying trade tools. Specialised roof racks can even carry a small boat. And this is achieved without taking up space inside the vehicle.

A roof rack will raise the effective height of a vehicle slightly, and cause a little bit of wind resistance. Tracklander design their roof racks to keep issues to an absolute minimum. Our roof racks are very low profile, so the already tall 4WD will not be made too much taller when the rack is empty. And the addition of a front wind deflector means almost not drag.

We can greatly reduce the drag of a roof rack by using a wind deflector. This will help reduce fuel consumption and dampen wind noise, should that be a problem.

A well-designed roof rack should be positioned only slightly above the roof of the vehicle, to keep vehicle clearance as low as possible. This will also help reduce drag. But if there is a flat vertical surface at the front of the roof rack, or if there is airflow beneath the rack, the vehicle will suffer some drag. This is where a wind deflector will help.

The wind deflector is simple in concept and design. It consists of an angled structure that allows air to move smoothly past the roof rack. Rough terrain causes any vehicle to flex slightly. We design our roof rack and wind deflectors to flex in the same manner, minimising stress.

Many of our custom roof racks incorporate the wind deflector into the design. Some roof racks, designs with an open front, do not require a wind deflector.
