About roof rack accessories
Almost everybody customises their 4WD. Some customisation is put there by the manufacturer when we place an order for a new vehicle. Some customisation is added later, by a third-party manufacturer. It is best to add customised accessories that are specifically designed for that particular make and model of vehicle.
Roof racks are perhaps the most common accessory for 4WDs. Whether private or commercial vehicle roof racks add considerable extra storage space. This storage space has several advantages: large items that could not fit inside the vehicle often fit on a roof rack; Items like fuel or gas bottles can be kept on a roof rack, away from passengers; solar panels or ariels can be fitted to roof racks.
There are a few disadvantages to roof racks, but these are slight. The weight and wind resistance of the roof rack means the vehicle will use more fuel. But we should expect to use more fuel when we carry a heavy load. And the wind resistance can be minimised with a wind deflector.
Roof racks will also raise the height of a vehicle, preventing it from entering low-clearance situations. But 4WDs usually cannot enter low clearance situations anyway, so this is hardly an issue.

- A wind deflector is a simple but effective addition to a roof rack. The forward-sloped surface of the wind deflector is more aerodynamic than the front of a standard roof rack. This means less wind resistance, so travel is quieter and fuel consumption is a little better.
- A jerry can holder is another possible addition to a roof rack. This holds a large fuel can securely in place.
- Gas bottles can also be carried safely with a gas bottle holder on the roof or mounted behind the vehicle.
- A ladder mounted on the side or back of the vehicle makes access to the roof rack quite easy, and it is much safer than a detachable ladder or any other means of climbing on the car.
- A boat loader is not so much an accessory for a roof rack as it is a specific type of roof rack. Rear-mounted rollers and tight straps allow a small boat to be easily loaded and safely transported on the roof of a moderate-sized 4WD.
- Light bars mean extra lights on the vehicle. Many in the mining industry find extra lights very useful.
- Shovels and other accessories can be carried on the side of a roof rack with the right mounting equipment. This provides easy access and means that a dirty shovel does not need to be inside the vehicle near the passengers.
